420 Celebrations & Cannabis Culture

The origins, the movement, and the worldwide celebration

The True Origin of 420

In fall 1971, five students at San Rafael High School in Marin County, California -- Steve Capper, Dave Reddix, Jeffrey Noel, Larry Schwartz, and Mark Gravich -- called themselves "the Waldos" because they hung out by a wall. They agreed to meet at 4:20 PM at the Louis Pasteur statue to search for an abandoned cannabis crop based on a treasure map. They never found it, but "420" became their code for everything cannabis.

The Grateful Dead Connection

Mark's father helped the Grateful Dead with real estate. Dave's brother was close with bassist Phil Lesh. The Waldos had all-access passes to Dead shows and parties, spreading "420" through the touring Deadhead community. In the early 1990s, Steve Bloom of High Times magazine received a flier at a Dead show in Oakland explaining the term. High Times published it, and April 20th became a global cannabis holiday.
